oil change

Most Sansone vehicles require a synthetic oil change in Woodbridge, NJ every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. How does synthetic oil differ from conventional motor oil? Learn why the former is optimal for modern automobiles and what you get with synthetic oil varieties.

What Is Synthetic Oil?

Synthetic oil is motor oil with added additives. It almost always contains a base material, typically distilled crude oil. Additional additives vary depending on brand and the models the oil is specified for. Common additives include petroleum and other similar derivatives.

Synthetic oils have been refined over the years to improve quality. Sophisticated filtering processes are also undertaken to remove impurities found in conventional oil.

Synthetic Vs Conventional Oil

The additives and more refined base oil gives synthetic oil better lubrication properties over its conventional counterparts. In addition, synthetic oils are also:

  • More chemically stable
  • Not as likely to oxidize
  • More likely to retain its molecular composition over time and under extreme temperatures

Synthetic oils are also largely why modern cars can go longer between oil changes.

What About Synthetic Blends?

You may have also seen motor oils listed as synthetic oil blends. This is a mixture of conventional and synthetic oil. The idea is to provide an oil quality above conventional oil that’s more affordable than full synthetic oil. However, we recommend full synthetic oil because it’s difficult to determine the ratio of synthetic to conventional oil mixture in a blend.
